Residents at the far end of Elcot Lane have been blocked in since Wednesday afternoon (August 9) after the trailer of an articulated truck tipped over.
Police and fire crews were called to the accident at around 2.15pm on Wednesday.
A lorry following SatNav instructions turned down Barnfield and attempted to turn left at the bottom on to Elcot Lane. It is a turning cars can make, but HGVs should not attempt.
While the driver was trying to manoeuvre round the tight turning, the lorry’s load shifted and turned the trailer unit onto its side. The cab remained upright. No other vehicle was involved.
The cargo is understood to be 20 one tonne bags of seed en route to Pewsey.
Residents at the very eastern end of Elcot Lane could only get out on foot and had to use a diversion via a footpath into White Horse Road.
At least up till 11.15 on Thursday morning the police at the scene were not allowing anyone to walk past the load as it looked to be unstable.
The police remained on site to co-ordinate the recovery. Further delay in moving the truck was due the lorry being very close to an electricity pole.
Police and recovery vehicles were waiting to get the electricity supply being turned off before the truck could be moved.
