WhiteHorse Marlborough CrossFit opened its doors for the first time this week and aims to cater for a wide range of fitness requirements for any age and ability.
Run by Marlborough gym instructor, Adam Dobie and his partner Alix Barbier, the gym is conveniently situated just off George Lane, behind the old Vauxhall garage, in a newly refurbished and fully equipped unit. It is open from 6am to 8.30 pm Monday to Friday, with more limited hours on a Saturday.
The gym has all the traditional facilities and equipment from Eleiko, the company sponsor. In addition, Adam and Alix are introducing CrossFit which is a popular strength and conditioning programme involving constantly varied high intensity functional movements.
It includes weight lifting, metabolic conditioning (running, cycling, rowing) and gymnastic type work such as pullups, working on the rings and handstands.
CrossFit boosts cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility and balance.
“Anyone can do it,” says Adam, “we can scale it to any individual…People get scared of CrossFit because of what they see on-line but CrossFit want to get rid of that idea and are promoting CrossFit for health. The Crossfit programme is designed for everyone whether you’re new to exercise or a seasoned athlete.”
“We are offering loads of classes to make it convenient for everyone. The 6am class gives people the chance to train, go home, get ready for work and then they have time to chill out in the evening.”
There are also CrossFit classes each day for kids aged 8-13 at 3.30pm and for teens aged 14-18 at 4.15 pm: “This gives them the opportunity to learn how to lift at a young age in a safe environment.”
There is also a weightlifting club every Wednesday evening with Marius Hardiman, former British champion in Olympic Weightlifting.
Adam and Alix work with a lot of equestrian athletes from the local area, helping them prepare for the Olympic Games and four star competitions. Eventers Rebecca Howard (Canada), Jessie Campbell (New Zealand) and GB riders Flora Harris and Georgie Strang are among their clients.
The gym has a range of packages ranging from £30 to £85 per month. There is no charge for an introductory session.
